CASTELLO LUIGI 2018
We have memories of a hot spring, the fourth hottest since measurements began in 1864. The summer was also particularly hot, and thanks to timely work in the vineyard, we were able to harvest the Merlot on 29 September and the Cabernet Franc with the Cabernet Sauvignon on 5 October, giving the grapes perfect ripeness!
After the 2007 vintage and the magnificent 2015 vintage, this 2018 vintage also scored a top 20/20!
74% Merlot | 13% Cabernet Franc | 13% Cabernet Sauvignon
Production: 8,700 bottles.
Tasting by André Kunz of the Schweizerische Weinzeitung:
Concentrated, velvety, complex, fresh, elegant, deep bouquet, cherry jelly, cassis, strawberries, Bounty, mint, cedar, delicate graphite. In the mouth concentrated, complex, powerful, elegant, fresh, excellent structure, lots of fine tannins, creamy black fruit, various, intense, sensational aromas, very long finish, dense, creamy, full, with lots of aftertaste aromas.
20/20 | 2025 - 2060.

CASTELLO LUIGI BIANCO 2019
The year 2019 was one of the warmest in Switzerland; in fact, the fifth warmest since measurements began in 1864. The month of April regrettably saw plenty of rainfall, particularly on the south side of the Alps. This situation, however, allowed water to accumulate in the soil, which helped to get through a particularly hot summer without the vines suffering water stress. Ultimately, this resulted in grapes with an interesting aromatic bouquet and a good balance between acidity, minerality and structure.
Production was unfortunately the second lowest ever.
Chardonnay
Production: 2,048 bottles.
Tasting by André Kunz of the Schweizerische Weinzeitung:
Finely creamy bouquet, powerful and fresh, young pear, delicate mango, lemon balm, chalk, yellow melon. On the palate dense, elegant, fresh, velvety-sweet fruitiness, well-integrated acidity, varied aromas, delicate minerality, dense structure, very long and full palate with delicate aftertaste aromas.
19/20 | 2025 - 2045.
- OUR HISTORY -
In 1988 Luigi Zanini bought a property named “Belvedere” located in the village of Besazio (Canton of Ticino – Switzerland) which included an old farmhouse from 1870 positioned right in the centre of the property and called “Civasca”.
The plot of land is located on the south-east side of the hill and lies in a natural basin, in the shape of an anphitheater.
- OUR VINEYARDS -
It covered 43,000 sqm of which 30,000 could be exploited for the cultivation of vines, because the ground consisted of limestone, tuff and slightly sandy soil, thus offering the best conditions for viniculture.
The first planned intervention was a general cleaning of all the brambles and shrubs. Luigi Zanini then planted the new vineyard: 2 hectares of which with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, plus 1 hectare with Chardonnay. The first bottled vintage was in 1997, 9 years after the planting of the wineyard. Over the years Luigi Zanini has been able to group an area of 278,463 sqm of which 125,374 sqm of vineyards.
- OUR CELLAR -
After obtaining the necessary permits on 27 October 1997, the old farmhouse was torn down and the new building rose in its place, the Castello Luigi.
Luigi Zanini designed an underground helicoidal wine cellar with a depth of 18,5 meters, ensuring that all cellar work could be carried out by gravity: from the pressing of the grapes to the decanting and the bottling, without the wine undergoing any type of mechanical intervention of sort.
